Carousels are designed to increase throughput and efficiency by bringing products to an operator to be picked. Carousels allow for increased efficiency with high density storage. By bringing the product to the operator, travel distance and time is eliminated for pickers decreasing fatigue and increasing productivity and accuracy. All of the carousels components are accessible from the outside making them easy and cheap to maintain. In addition to this, factory pre-assembly allows for low installation costs. Carousels are popular for distribution applications for their ability to decrease floor space while still maintaining a high storage density and efficient throughput.

Types of Carousels:

  • Horizontal Carousels - consist of an oval track with rotating bins containing shelves that deliver items to the operator. Often used in integrated workstations of carousels called a “pod.C
  • Vertical Carousels - Designed with shelves that rotate up or down via the shortest path, delivering items to an ergonomically positioned pick window, the vertical carousel maximizes the use of overhead space and can recover up to 75% of the floor space required for traditional shelving systems.
  • Vertical Lift Module (VLM) -  an enclosed system of vertically arranged trays, an extraction platform and a series of computerized controls that delivers items to an ergonomically positioned workstation. The VLM automatically locates and retrieves stored items with a push of a button or a scan of a bar code.
